About The Brand
Junya Watanabe is a Tokyo-based fashion designer who was born in Fukushima in 1961. He graduated from Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo in 1984 and began his career as a pattern cutter at Comme des Garçons, where he worked under the founder-owner, Rei Kawakubo. Watanabe's talent and dedication were quickly recognized, and he soon began designing the Comme des Garçons Tricot line. In 1992, he launched his first own-label collection under the Comme des Garçons title, under which he still operates.
Watanabe's designs are known for their avant-garde style, which encompasses new cutting concepts, innovative draping techniques, and ingenious fabric sourcing. His unique approach to fashion has earned him a place in the Dictionnaire International de la Mode. Watanabe moved his shows from Tokyo to Paris in 1993, and in 2001, he introduced a menswear line. He has also mentored up-and-coming designers, such as Tao Kurihara, who recently launched her own label under the Comme des Garcons label. Overall, Junya Watanabe is a visionary designer who has left an indelible mark on the fashion industry.
